Maternal Suicide Awareness and Prevention

The "Is Mom Ok?" campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about maternal suicide and empowering communities to support new mothers' mental health. Maternal suicide is a devastating yet preventable tragedy.
Maternal suicide is caused by a complex interaction of psychological, social, and biological factors that occur during pregnancy and the year after birth. It is an urgent public health issue because it is a leading cause of maternal mortality, and the impacts extend far beyond the mother to affect the child, family, and wider community.
Because the perinatal period involves frequent contact with healthcare professionals, maternal suicide often signals a breakdown in screening, mental health support, and timely intervention within the healthcare system. Addressing this public health crisis requires better screening protocols and mental health care access.
Maternal Suicide Facts
-
High incidence: In many developed nations, including the U.S., maternal suicide is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and in the first year postpartum. A significant percentage of these deaths are preventable.
-
Rising rates: Studies show that suicidal thoughts and self-harm among childbearing individuals have increased in recent years, particularly among younger, low-income, and Black mothers.
-
Impact on children: A mother's suicide has a profound and lasting effect on her surviving children. Maternal suicidality can also negatively impact a child's development, affecting mother-infant attachment, language skills, and cognitive outcomes. Children of mothers with suicidal ideation are also at increased risk for future mental health issues.
