While getting emergency help: stay with her if safe, have another trusted adult care for the baby, and secure weapons or other means of harm if you can do so safely.
Recognizing Emergency Warning Signs
Sees or hears things others do not.
Has beliefs that are disconnected from reality.
Becomes severely confused, disoriented, or unable to tell what is real.
Attempts to harm herself or someone else, or has a plan and intent to act.
Cannot keep herself or her baby safe.
Hallucinations, delusions, or severe confusion after childbirth may signal postpartum psychosis, a medical emergency.
Other warning signs that need prompt support include:
Talking about wanting to die, feeling trapped, or being a burden.
Looking for ways to end her life.
Withdrawing from others or experiencing extreme mood changes.
Increasing alcohol or drug use.
Sleeping very little or much more than usual.
Call or text 988 if these signs appear, especially when they are new or worsening. You can call about someone you’re worried about. If there is immediate danger, call 911.
