Advocacy Opportunities

Maternal mental health awareness is supported and promoted through various significant awareness days, weeks, and months dedicated to raising awareness about the mental well-being of mothers and families. Some of the key awareness periods for maternal mental health include:

 

  • PPP Awareness Day PPP Awareness Day, hosted by Cherished Mom is observed each May. PPPAD is dedicated to raising awareness about Pregnancy & Postpartumm Psychosis. This day serves to promote awareness, understanding, and providing resources for individuals and families affected by Pregnancy & Postpartum Psychosis emphasizing the importance of early detection, intervention, and comprehensive care.
  • Postpartum Support International’s Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week (May): Postpartum Support International (PSI) organizes Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, typically held in May, to raise awareness about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and advocate for improved support and resources for affected individuals.
  • World Maternal Mental Health Day (May 5th): This global day of awareness, observed on May 5th, aims to raise awareness about maternal mental health and advocate for improved access to mental health care for mothers worldwide.
  • Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month (May): May is recognized as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, focusing on promoting awareness, understanding, and support for maternal mental health disorders, including postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and psychosis.
  • National Maternal Suicide Awareness Month (September) This month long initiative is focused on raising awareness about and preventing Maternal Suicide.
  • Maternal Suicide Awareness Week (First week of May) to raise awareness about maternal suicide initiated by the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health.
  • National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month (October): October is dedicated to raising awareness about pregnancy and infant loss, acknowledging the emotional impact on mothers and families and promoting support for those affected by these experiences.

These awareness periods provide valuable opportunities to educate, advocate, and support maternal mental health, fostering understanding and empathy for the challenges faced by mothers and families. By recognizing and participating in these awareness days, weeks, and months, individuals and organizations can promote positive change and improved support for maternal mental health.
